I remember you doing that, Jeff! One question I’m asking myself is whether all the students have to agree to *one* syllabus or *one* reading schedule. I’m thinking about it in terms of pods of 4-5 students, depending on how big the class is. If these pods are reading and reviewing different materials, I wonder what unique knowledge they might bring to the class, and how we might apply these various strands of knowledge. I’m inspired, in large part, by Michael Wesch’s “Smart Mob”: mediatedcultures.net/smatterings/how-to-get-students-to-find-and-read-94-articles-before-the-next-class/.

I tried a version of this with my History of the Information Age class last fall where they worked with me to construct the syllabus, find readings, and decide on assignments they would do. My posts about the class along the way are here. [Start at the bottom and read up.] Sorry I won't be able to be at the discussion, but I'd love to hear what you all come up with.

I love the idea of spending first part of the term having students put together the readings — including primary sources (digital or not), and multimedia sources — for a course. Part of the coursework could be students not just finding readings but also making the case for what they chose and why they are best for meeting the course objectives — using a blog or whatever format is appropriate. You could either have students come up with the reading list by consensus or let them individually choose among their peers’ recommendations. Then there’s the matter of what they would do with these readings in terms of assignments for the rest of the semester… I’d be really interested in talking more about this.

I dig it. I'm on a committee at my campus currently thinking about these issues. We made a field trip to UNCC where we were shown many very cool examples of innovative learning spaces. (Flickr pix are here.) I'd love a THATCamp conversation about the topic.

I don’t agree with Smith’s assertion that people are as hesitant about publishing in digital-only venues as they are about creating other digital resources (in terms of what “counts” for such things as P&T). That might just be something that has changed over the 8 years since she published her essay. Though there may still be resistance from some quarters, many more people (imho) seem to recognize that peer-reviewed is peer-reviewed whether the venue is printed or digital.

I do agree that preservation is an important issue and will continue to be so, but I’m guessing that we’re a long way from P&T committees taking preservation plans (or the lack thereof) into consideration. My sense is that we’re only just now getting to the point where these committees are starting to recognize that digital work of any kind could be used as evidence of scholarly productivity. (Here I’ll admit that I’m only speaking from my own experience on my campus as I go through the process for promotion and tenure this year. My DH work has been recognized as valuable, thankfully, but concerns about preservation would require a kind of expertise that almost no one on my campus possesses.)

An observation: as people may already know, the Office of Digital Humanities at the National Endowment for the Humanities now requires grant applicants to explain their plans for data preservation.

Oh I want IN. I also think we need to talk about the reasons we want/need to hack space in the first place–what things are we capable of doing (thanks to digital tools, alternate pedagogies) that just weren’t on the table when traditional campus spaces were set up.

I love this idea. I spend a perverse amount of time thinking about the physical spaces I work in, without making as much of an impact as I’d like. I’ve also worked alongside many colleagues at Georgia Tech who actively work to disrupt the campus spaces around them, and it’s time I start doing so too.
